8/5/2009: Novel Influenza A (H1N1) Virus

The University of the Sciences Pandemic Preparedness Team continues to monitor the situation regarding the spread of the novel influenza A (H1N1) virus. As new information becomes available, the team will provide periodic updates to the University community.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the main source of information concerning the swine flu outbreak at http://www.cdc.gov.

While there has been no cases report on campus or to the Student Health Office, all members of the community are encouraged to practice healthy habits as established by the CDC:

  • Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water
  • Use Alcohol-based hand cleaners
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth to prevent the spread of germs
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people
  • If you get sick with flu like symptoms, the CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school, and limit contact with others, for at least 24 hours after your fever has subside without the use of medication

Individuals experiencing flu like symptoms are encouraged to contact their doctor or students can visit the Student Health Office.
